Swiss Entrepreneurs Foundation

Simon Enderli, CEO

Navigating the Future Of Entrepreneurship

Simon Enderli is the CEO of the Swiss Entrepreneurs Foundation (SEF) and President of the Swiss Entrepreneurs & Startup Association (SWESA). Before joining the Swiss Entrepreneurs Foundation as Deputy CEO in 2019, Simon spent 8 years at PostFinance, the financial services unit of the Swiss postal service.

Through this article, Simon explains the importance of resilience and strategic focus in the evolving startup landscape, where securing funding and achieving profitability have become more challenging. He also highlights the potential of innovative collaborations between startups and established companies as a key driver for future success.

Professional Background and Current Role

I originally studied economics in Switzerland and then worked mainly in the financial sector. I have now been working for the Swiss Entrepreneurs Foundation for five years and was appointed its CEO around three years ago. I am responsible for the strategic and operational management of the foundation, primarily looking after the Swiss Entrepreneurs Fund and political engagement.

Shifts in Startup Funding and Scaling

The golden years are over for the time being. Valuations have become lower (or more realistic), fundraising has become more difficult and the sole focus on top-line growth is no longer enough. Startups need stronger USPs, demonstrable product-market fits and a business model that becomes profitable faster. As an entrepreneur, you now need even more conviction, strength and perseverance.

Geopolitical Shifts and Their Impact on Startups

Geopolitical uncertainties and tensions are never positive for the global economy, whether for start-ups or large corporations. But it is something that cannot be influenced and is sometimes unpredictable. It is therefore difficult to prepare for such situations. Of course, it is helpful in such cases if you are not a single product company or have too much exposure to individual markets.

Role of Unconventional Ideas in Innovation Strategy

We are primarily interested in the innovation strategies of the startups that we support. We appreciate unconventional proposals if they have a clear focus and support the realization of the company’s vision.

The Future Relationship Between Startups and Established Companies

I am still convinced that there is a lot of hidden potential in the collaboration between start-ups and corporations. And I’m not thinking primarily of CVC, but much more of innovation management, research and development and access to new markets. Start-ups can benefit from the know-how and networks of large companies, while the latter can adopt new approaches from innovative young companies.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals in the Startup Sector

Have a clear vision, a sharp focus and seek help from experienced entrepreneurs, but avoid consultants who will steal your time (and money). Find one or more dedicated co-founders who complement your personality and skills. Know where to play. Don’t be an award collector; don’t waste too much time on LinkedIn and choose wisely the events you want to attend that offer you real value. Accept if you are no longer the right person for your original role and don’t be too proud if you realize you need another CEO.
